Proverbs 16:22 "Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly."
Whenever I see the word "understanding" in a verse the Lord reminds me of Job 28:28 that has a phenomenal working definition. Understanding = to depart from evil, get away from sin.
The Hebrew word for "understanding" in Prov. 16:22 is different but similar in meaning. In Job 28:28, it means knowledge, meaning, wisdom. The Hebrew word for "understanding in this verse has the idea of intelligence, skill, prudence, and has a greater significance more than just book knowledge. By implication it can mean "success." Only through this discrete wisdom or understanding can we truly have Godly success.
What is this understanding to those who have it? A wellspring of life. Think of a wellspring as an artesian spring, it is a fountain of pure, clean, fresh, water that never stops giving. It is source of life. Thus, understanding is a foundational principal of Christian living. Godly understanding nourishes and grows the life of God within. This understanding is from God, it is given to those who keep God’s commandments, it brings praise, gives favor, and gives patience (2 Chronicles 22:12; Psalm 111:10; Prov. 12:8, 13:15, 19:11).
What would we give to have a never ending source of cash, that just keeps on giving and giving? What would we use the money for? A good car, a nice house, supporting world missions, helping the poor? Well guess what! Understanding is worth far more than a large steady stream of cash. We all know that, but often do not live like we know it. Understanding is a never ending source of life. It is joy, peace, and contentment amidst the battle we are in as soldiers of Christ.
How do we get a hold of this understanding? "Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man." Proverbs 3:3-4
We must hold voraciously to the Truth and live our lives by it. We must not compromise the teaching of God’s Word and we must promulgate the Truth in love wherever God places us (Eph. 4:15).
If we lose sight of the Truth, we take that which is promoted by fools as truth who reject Jesus, the Truth (John 14:6). Taking the fool’s instruction is folly.
As a believe, are you seeking to obey the Lords commandments? If you love Him, you will (John 14:15). Have you lost sight of the Truth? Do not get discouraged if you have. Get your focus back on it and let it be your continual meditation. God will be with you to help you (Joshua 1:8-9).
