Proverbs 2:19 "None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life."
In this passage, Solomon notes the demise of the man that commits sexual sin with the immoral woman. Sexual sin causes permanent damage, and leaves scars that last a life time. Promiscuity in the thoughts and action is detrimental to one’s life. It saps a person’s vitality and leaves a person wasted, unfulfilled, and empty (Prov. 5:1-14). It’s pleasure is a poor substitute for the satisfactory intimacy that God designed to be fulfilled within the bounds of marriage between a man and a woman. Hebrews 13:4 says, "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge." God hates sin, and wants us to hate it too.
God wants His children pure. He clearly spells out His will to His children in 1 Thessalonians 4:3, sanctification (being set apart to God, holy) by abstaining from fornication. The Greek word for "fornication" covers the whole gamut of sexual sin, adultery, fornication, sodomy, and bestiality. God wants His children pure because He wants the best for His children. Jesus came to save us from our sin, ourselves, not just to give us a ticket to heaven and leave us in our sin (Mat. 1:21). Christ’s salvation saves us from our sin, and being a disciple of Christ saves us from ourselves.
Immoral living is impossible when taking hold of the way of life. No man or woman can live for God and live with a girl friend or boy friend at the same time. No one can entertain lustful thoughts and live for God simultaneously. In brief, there are two choices, serve God or serve sin (Romans 6:16). The person that thinks he/she live immorally and serve God has deceived himself/herself. God says they are not on the path of life which means they are on the way to destruction. The way back to life is repentance of this sin.
Now for the application, "Am I taking hold of the way of life? What evidence is there that I am on the way of life? How will I continue to take hold of the path of life this year? Am I making provision for my flesh (Rom. 13:14)? Am I being spiritually minded or carnally minded (Rom. 8:6)?" Take hold of Life (John 14:6).
