Proverbs 13:16 “Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly. ”
Proverbs 14:8 and 16:22 shed more light on understanding the prudent and what the folly of fools is.
“The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.” Proverbs 14:8
“Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.” Proverbs 16:22
- Understands his way. He lives with purpose. He seeks to know what God wants him to do and then does it.
- Fears the Lord, because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Prov. 1:7)
- Folly = deceit. In other words they are liars and beguile others and themselves. They are someone who tells half-truths.
- Instruction = be dishonest.
The prudent man believes that God orchestrates his circumstances and seeks to live according to this knowledge (Rom. 8:28, 12:1-2). The foolish guy is a compete opposite. He rejects this knowledge, and lives according to his own deceitful and wicked heart’s content (Jer. 17:9).
Now let’s apply it. Today, am I living according to my own deceitful heart’s whims like the fool (Prov. 28:26). Or, am I living prudently, realizing God is in control, and seeking to live for His glory no matter what comes my way? Am I dealing with knowledge or laying open the folly of my heart? Does my life evidence God’s control?
